Defining Ugly

Combining course content and personal research, I am working with colleague Claire Mason to explore how designers choose what we design that which is narratively described as ‘ugly’ in any given circumstance. Our upcoming text approaches the topic using a variety of aesthetic theories, interviews with designers, and conversation topics to empower discussions around this often delicate topic. We look forward to finishing the text in December 2026.
